Technologies

Power meter
The ‘brain’ of the power meter, the central unit, is housed in the crankcase of the ULTEGRA crankset, whilst the strain gauges are integrated into the crank arms, enabling them to measure power separately for the left and right sides. The central unit is very compact and, discreetly mounted behind the chainrings, very unobtrusive. This makes the system one of the lightest and most seamlessly integrated systems on the market. Furthermore, this design allows for easy chainring replacement without compromising the accuracy of the power meter. For system checks or firmware updates, SHIMANO’s new E-TUBE platform enables incredibly simple, Bluetooth-based communication via smartphones and tablets. To ensure communication with and data display on a wide range of cycle computers or GPS devices, the power metre crankset features both Bluetooth and ANT+. An integrated, rechargeable battery powers the power metre. Charging is carried out via a small magnetic adapter, meaning no covers or lids need to be opened and weather resistance is maintained in all conditions.

HOLLOWTECH II – Perfect balance between stiffness, stability, weight and rotational efficiency
The HOLLOWTECH II technology was designed to produce an optimised crankset that minimises the effort required by the rider to drive the bike. The high stiffness of the crankset ensures efficient power transfer when pedalling, whilst its low weight reduces the strain on the rider, particularly over longer distances. The crankset was developed with a view to achieving an optimal balance between stiffness and low weight. HOLLOWTECH technology enables extremely lightweight, hollow crank arms, which are manufactured using SHIMANO’s exclusive forging technology to achieve maximum stiffness. Furthermore, on the HOLLOWTECH II crankset, the right-hand crank is firmly connected to the bottom bracket spindle, achieving an optimal balance between maximum stiffness and minimum weight. The external bottom bracket offers better weight distribution and greater stability, ensuring more efficient power transfer.

SEIS SHIMANO ELECTRONIC INTELLIGENT SYSTEM

The innovative shifting technology of the SEIS is still based on the SHIMANO INDEX SYSTEM (SIS), whose outstanding shifting performance has been proven over many years. The main difference between the systems is that shifting is no longer carried out mechanically, but electronically. This electronic gear-changing system has been extensively tested in recent years by several professional cyclists under every conceivable condition, e.g. in the rain, in mud, in extreme cold, on cobblestones and even when these factors are combined. Shifting is carried out at the simple touch of a button. No physical effort is required to shift gears, which offers significant advantages, as the rider always maintains a firm grip on the handlebars and can concentrate on riding without being distracted by shifting. The gear-changing system enables precise and effortless gear changes in all situations, even with cold hands or when the rider is completely exhausted. Furthermore, gear-changing performance can no longer be impaired by dirty or stretched cables, as the gear-changing signal is transmitted electronically. The control buttons operate in a similar way to mechanical dual-control levers, making it easy to get used to the SEIS.

E-Tube
The E-Tube platform offers optimum flexibility. E-Tube transmits interactive signals and supplies power to all components via ‘plug-and-play’ connections. E-Tube is resistant to corrosion, stretching and frost, and requires minimal maintenance. The SMPCE1 establishes the connection between the PC and the components to update the firmware. Digital devices remain up to date by updating the firmware, ensuring improved performance.

Shimano Shadow RD
With its sophisticated technology, the SHIMANO SHADOW rear derailleur is particularly well-suited to a more aggressive riding style. Its extremely low-profile design brings a number of advances. Thanks to its flat design and single-preload construction, the rear derailleur does not strike the chainstay, even under the harshest conditions. The shifting action is smooth and quiet.
