SHIMANO announces the launch of the DURA-ACE WH-R9370 road bike wheelset series, a next-generation range for riders who demand uncompromising speed, responsiveness and long-term reliability. Developed as part of Shimano’s ‘Science of Speed’ design philosophy, the new platform offers improvements in terms of weight reduction, aerodynamic efficiency and structural stiffness. It is designed as a complete system for modern road, time trial and triathlon racing.

The WH-R9370 series – comprising the C36, C50, C60, C99 (front wheel) and Rear Disc – has been specifically developed to meet today’s racing standards, optimised for 28–30C tyres and tailored to the increasing demands of elite sport. The new DURA-ACE wheelsets also feature Shimano’s adjustable cup-and-cone system, which allows the torque to be optimised when fitted to the bike, and are equipped with replaceable bearings that improve ease of maintenance. This allows the torque to be optimised for each individual bike, preventing energy loss and ensuring your wheels spin freely and efficiently.

Weight reduction and acceleration – Compared to the previous-generation DURA-ACE R9270, the WH-R9370 reduces weight by up to 220 grams per wheelset, delivering a significantly more agile riding experience on climbs and more precise acceleration – without compromising on riding stability or durability.

This progress is based on a completely redesigned construction, the highlights of which include new carbon spoke technology, improved rim structures and a holistic system development for rim, hub and spoke architectures.

Aerodynamic optimisation for 28–30C racing tyres – In modern road racing, the trend towards wider tyres has become established in order to improve rolling efficiency and control. The WH-R9370 series has been designed accordingly and features the following characteristics:

Specific rim profiles for the front and rear wheels, tailored to the respective rim depth

Outer widths designed to strike a balance between aerodynamics and crosswind stability

In controlled tests at 48 km/h with 30C tyres, riders can achieve up to 2.7 watts less aerodynamic drag. Combined with a weight reduction compared to the previous generation, this leads to measurable advantages in competition. Each rim profile has been refined using advanced computer simulations and validated in controlled aerodynamic test environments to ensure performance under real-world riding conditions – not just under idealised wind tunnel angles.

Carbon spokes: Developed specifically for the demands of competitive cycling – A key innovation in the WH-R9370 wheelsets is Shimano’s newly developed carbon spokes, which are available in two profiles to meet specific performance objectives:

Super Aero: 5.2 mm × 0.8 mm

Aero: 4.0 mm × 1.1 mm

Spoke type, count and configuration are tailored to each model to achieve the desired riding character – whether that’s a light, responsive feel on climbs, balanced all-round racing performance, or high stiffness at high speeds for sprints and flat stages. With two specialised spoke models: Aero and Super Aero. Each wheel is tuned to its specific performance objective, offering everything from agile responsiveness on climbs through balanced all-round racing performance to uncompromising stiffness at high speeds.

This system-specific approach ensures that stiffness, aerodynamics and compliance are harmonised rather than optimised in isolation from one another. Advanced cup-and-cone system: faster, easier to maintain and watertight For performance-oriented riders who train intensively and compete, smooth running, precise adjustability and long-term ease of maintenance are crucial. The new DURA-ACE wheelsets retain Shimano’s adjustable cup-and-cone hub design, which is renowned for its smooth operation and precise adjustment capabilities. This system allows torque to be optimised once the wheelset is fitted, whilst ensuring stable performance under loads from various directions. Furthermore, the system has been further developed with replaceable bearings, which improves ease of maintenance and ensures consistent long-term performance. In comparative tests, Shimano’s revised ‘cup-and-cone’ system exhibits significantly lower friction than conventional cartridge bearing designs, contributing to smoother operation and stable long-term performance. Two bikes were used in the tests, one with cartridge bearings and one with a cup-and-cone system, both subjected to identical forces: 500 N of vertical force, corresponding to the weight of the bike and the rider; 200 N of thrust from pedalling; and 5,000 N of clamping force from the thru-axle. The results showed a 30% reduction in torque with the new cup-and-cone bearings compared to conventional cartridge bearings.
