What is a bicycle inner tube made of?
A bicycle inner tube is usually made of butyl rubber. Butyl is a very elastic and at the same time airtight synthetic rubber. As with tyres, however, other additives are required for the rubber compound. The rubber compound used can result in significant differences in quality. Schwalbe inner tubes are extremely airtight and elastic. Thanks to their high elasticity, an inner tube covers a wide range of different tyre sizes. A distinction is made between mould-heated and autoclave-heated inner tubes. Vulcanisation in a mould results in more uniform wall thicknesses and therefore lower weights and significantly better air retention. This is why autoclave-heated hoses, which are easier to manufacture, have become increasingly rare in recent years. Schwalbe inner tubes have always been manufactured as mould-heated tubes. Each tube also has a valve, which is connected to the tube by vulcanisation.

What special features does a Schwalbe inner tube offer?
In addition to the quality of the ingredients, the purity of the rubber compound is decisive for the quality of the inner tube. The base material is therefore pressed through a total of seven filters under enormous pressure before extrusion. All hoses are placed in a mould and pumped up for vulcanisation. This is the only way to ensure uniform wall thicknesses and high air retention. All finished hoses are inflated and stored for at least 24 hours to test them for air retention. Each inner tube is then carefully checked individually by visual inspection. German bicycle dealers have valued Schwalbe inner tubes for many years for their high reliability. Thanks to its high elasticity and quality, one tube covers a wide range of tyre sizes. Tube no. 17 works just as well with 28 mm tyres as it does with 47 mm tyres. A great advantage for stock-keeping in the trade. All valves are nickel-plated and threaded. The valve insert is always replaceable. Schwalbe tubes with the classic bicycle valve can also be air pressure tested and have a highly pressure-resistant valve seal. Every Schwalbe inner tube is 100 per cent recyclable. We can use the recycled butyl rubber in the production of new inner tubes without any loss of quality. For this purpose, we have developed our own devulcanisation process in our factory. We have been using this process very successfully for years. Every new Schwalbe standard inner tube therefore already consists of around 20 per cent recycled raw material. The energy balance of our recycling process, including all transport routes, is extremely positive. Compared to the production of the same amount of new butyl, only a fifth of the energy is consumed. In Germany, we support the recycling process for old bicycle inner tubes with a collection process that bicycle dealers can easily participate in and which is free of charge.

Which is the best valve?
Three different systems have established themselves on the market and it is difficult to give a clear recommendation. It is important that the valve fits the rim bore and that there is also a suitable air pump. Contrary to a common assumption, there are no longer any major differences in air retention. At least with Schwalbe, all valves seal well and are suitable for high pressures. The classic bicycle valve or Dunlop valve is still the most widely used. Most cyclists are familiar with them. The valve insert is easy to replace and the air can be released very quickly. Fitting a tube with a Dunlop valve is more complicated because the valve insert and union nut have to be removed in order to insert the valve through the valve hole. The inner tube can only be pumped up once both have been reinserted. With the conventional Dunlop valve, it is not possible to measure the air pressure. Only with the special Schwalbe Dunlop valve have we created a feedback option so that you can check the air pressure with the Airmax pressure gauge. In the past, Dunlop valves were very difficult to pump. Today, however, this is no longer the case due to more modern valve inserts. The Sclaverand valve is narrower than the other valves (6 instead of 8 mm). It requires a smaller rim bore and is therefore particularly suitable for narrow road bike rims. It is approx. 4-5 g lighter than the Auto and Dunlop valves. It can be closed manually with the knurled nut. You have to unscrew it before inflating, which often causes problems for first-time users. The thin pin on the top can easily bend when putting the air pump on and off. Caution: If you use tubes with Sclaverand valves in rims with larger valve holes, this can lead to the valve tearing off, as the metal edge of the hole can then separate the valve stem from the tube. The car valve is very easy to fill at the petrol station. Older and very simple bicycle air pumps are not compatible with the auto valve.
