Calculate frame size
The right size of your hardtail mountain-bike:
The Inside leg length is multiplied by 0.226 and thus you get the theoretical value of the frame size in inch. One inch equals 2.54 cm.
If the theoretical value is in-between two sizes, the following rule of thumb can be applied:
- choose the smaller size when riding athletically
- choose the larger size when riding tour-orientated
How to determine your Inside leg length:
The Inside leg length or stride height is the length of the inside of the leg. The most accurate way to measure your stride length is to use a spirit level and a tape measure or folding rule. Stand barefoot on a flat surface, clamp the spirit level horizontally between your legs and measure the distance from the upper edge of the spirit level to the ground. This value corresponds to your stride length.
Alternatively, you can also determine your frame height based on your height, see the table below. However, the method using inseam length is more accurate.

Longer axle
This is important for people whose foot position as viewed from above is V-shaped. The feet are placed parallel to the pedals, which no longer corresponds to the natural position and can lead to discomfort in the knees. Therefore should complaints particularly on the outer side of the knee occurs on Fibula head, the feet should be placed according to their natural position on the pedal. When using click pedals Cleat rates are set without problems. Since then, however, it is often too narrow for the heel and this drags on the crank and the frame, the longer axis of SQlab pedals provides quite easily for more space at the foot position. Even with shoe size 45, it is often closely and you see smooth polished cranks.
Shorter axle
These pedals are rarely used, but still have their place. The short axis is suitable for cyclists with a small size that can run on a parallel foot position. The so-called Q-factor is therefore lower. Especially in combination with a narrow seat bone distance and narrower hip width, it makes sense to stand with your feet as close together.
Normal axle
The standard measure for all pedals of the market leaders in this sector.
Movement
During the the foot pedaling motion would make a slight rotation. Therefore, we recommend using click pedals, almost all click pedals, not only from SQlab, allow this slight rotation of the foot. Regular platform pedals should therefore not have to grippy surface even if the slippage is a certain danger. Pedals with great supporting surface grip, while often bite even on pins in shoe sole when driving but when get off a twisting of the knee can occur.
Contact surface
The contact surface of our pedals is always horizontal. Several vendors of supposedly ergonomic products offer pedals or shoes with a preinstalled angle the so-called V-wedge. Here the foot is raised slightly on the inside. This concept is highly controversial among experts. The human being is walk used for millions of years on a level surface. Even if the pedaling motion for biomechanical human development is still quite new, so the foot angle is a very individual level. Thus, there are likely to be even more people who need a wedge in the opposite direction. The alignment of the feet is made better in the shoe and best with insoles.
