Calculate frame size
The right size of your hardtail mountain-bike:
The Inside leg length is multiplied by 0.226 and thus you get the theoretical value of the frame size in inch. One inch equals 2.54 cm.
If the theoretical value is in-between two sizes, the following rule of thumb can be applied:
- choose the smaller size when riding athletically
- choose the larger size when riding tour-orientated
How to determine your Inside leg length:
The Inside leg length or stride height is the length of the inside of the leg. The most accurate way to measure your stride length is to use a spirit level and a tape measure or folding rule. Stand barefoot on a flat surface, clamp the spirit level horizontally between your legs and measure the distance from the upper edge of the spirit level to the ground. This value corresponds to your stride length.
Alternatively, you can also determine your frame height based on your height, see the table below. However, the method using inseam length is more accurate.

Frame-size in cm: multiply your Inside leg length by the factor 0.61. Frame size in inch: multiply your Inside leg length by the factor 0.24.If the theoretical value lies between two sizes, the following rule of thumb can be applied:
- Rather the smaller frame size when riding sportsmanlikely
- Rather the next frame in size when riding tour-orientated
- Deduct approx. 5 cm (or 2 inches respectively) of the theoretical size when using spring-mounted seat posts.

Product information "Gel 160 Energy Gel 12x65g"
It’s a biopolymer matrix, filled with a unique blend of fructose and glucose (ratio of 0.8:1) which enables uptakes of up to 100 grams of carbohydrates per hour. The Gel 160 is built by harnessing natural hydrogel technology and built with six natural ingredients. It doesn’t contain any colorants or preservatives and comes in 65 g servings. Each serving contains 60% carbohydrates – a high weight to energy ratio.
Features - Maurten Gel 160
- GEL 160 - The GEL is a hydrogel – a biopolymer matrix that holds carbohydrates. It relies on the same concept as the drinks where the hydrogel technology enables a smoother transportation of carbohydrates through the stomach to the intestine where the carbohydrates are absorbed. In the case of drinks, the hydrogel is formed in the acidity of the stomach – but the GEL is a hydrogel formed in production, by combining sodium alginate and calcium carbonate under exact conditions.
- No added flavors - Maurten is not impressed by artificial flavors. You can tell what you're getting from the taste of their drink mixes.
- Clean - No added colorants or preservatives. The sports fuel contains only natural ingredients. Nothing more and nothing less than what’s needed.
- Amount of carbohydrates - It is well known that our bodies can make use of about 60 grams of ingested carbohydrates per hour, in the form of glucose or maltodextrin (glucose polymer). Using a 0.5:1 combination of fructose and glucose/maltodextrin, allows uptake of up to 90 grams per hour. More recent studies have shown that increased fructose content, above 0.5:1 enables an even higher uptake. The GEL 160 is based on a 0.8:1 fructose-to-glucose ratio. One serving contains 40 grams of carbohydrates.

Technology
Hydrogel
Hydrogels are widely used in the food industry, often as thickeners and structurants. A hydrogel is a biopolymer- and water-based structure with very small pores. As a three-dimensional network with the ability to hold water, it looks and behaves a bit like a kitchen sponge.
At Maurten, they found a way to build hydrogels with natural food ingredients. And they have filled the structure with the most efficient source of energy around - carbohydrates.
The hydrogel of their sports drinks are built from the combination of two natural ingredients:
- Alginate - extracted from the cell walls of brown algae
- Pectin - found in apples, lemons, carrots and tomatoes, to name a few
These two dietary fibers have been used for decades within the food industry. Combined under precisely the right circumstances, alginate and pectin form a pH-sensitive hydrogel.
