A worn chain provokes poor shifting behavior and drastically shortens the life of the sprockets. The CC-3.2 wear gauge from Park Tool shows exactly whether a chain is still within the tolerance of 0, 5% (for 11- and 12-speed chains) or 0.75% (for 5- to 10-speed chains) elongation - the values at which most manufacturers recommend changing the chain.
One side of the CC-3.2 is used to check for chain wear at the 0.5% level of chain wear; the other side is used to check at the 0.75% level. Select suitable side and lower CC-3.2 onto chain. If gauge tip fits completely into chain link, the chain is worn and should be replaced. If gauge tip does not fit into link, the chain is not worn and does not require replacement.
