Calculate frame size
The right size of your hardtail mountain-bike:
The Inside leg length is multiplied by 0.226 and thus you get the theoretical value of the frame size in inch. One inch equals 2.54 cm.
If the theoretical value is in-between two sizes, the following rule of thumb can be applied:
- choose the smaller size when riding athletically
- choose the larger size when riding tour-orientated
How to determine your Inside leg length:
The Inside leg length or stride height is the length of the inside of the leg. The most accurate way to measure your stride length is to use a spirit level and a tape measure or folding rule. Stand barefoot on a flat surface, clamp the spirit level horizontally between your legs and measure the distance from the upper edge of the spirit level to the ground. This value corresponds to your stride length.
Alternatively, you can also determine your frame height based on your height, see the table below. However, the method using inseam length is more accurate.

Evaluations
Average rating of 3.6 out of 5 stars
Average rating of 3 out of 5 stars
Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars
Average rating of 3 out of 5 stars
A few defects make it insufficient. Overall it works fairly well, offline maps are nice, the GPS is precise, there are plenty of features (even too many) and the battery life is stellar. It is all ruined by two major defects that make it insufficient if not paired with another device, hence the 3/5. The major defect number 1 are the buttons. There are too many buttons, it's hard to remember which does what, they are in the worst position ever (in the bottom corners?! seriously? Put them on the top side not on the corners!) it's easy to miss, touch the wrong button or unlock the device from the mount instead. Moreover half the time the buttons don't register, which is very frustrating. The second is a UI from the '90s with some make up. Suunto has a much better user interface, simpler, cleaner, easy to use, no-nonsense. There are so many issues, just a few examples: navigation notifications are in the way. They are nice to have, but they cover too much screen space, for very long time (the device warns about turns several minutes ahead of time) covering the metrics. The course drawing app? Unusable, you make a mistake or want to edit the course later and you are in a lot of troubles. I always use another app, such as Suunto or Komoot and then import the track instead. Garmin needs to do some hardware and software user interface design improvement to make the Edge 540 a great product. I must have another device, currently a Suunto, on the side to make it the Garmin usable.
