Calculate frame size
The right size of your hardtail mountain-bike:
The Inside leg length is multiplied by 0.226 and thus you get the theoretical value of the frame size in inch. One inch equals 2.54 cm.
If the theoretical value is in-between two sizes, the following rule of thumb can be applied:
- choose the smaller size when riding athletically
- choose the larger size when riding tour-orientated
How to determine your Inside leg length:
The Inside leg length or stride height is the length of the inside of the leg. The most accurate way to measure your stride length is to use a spirit level and a tape measure or folding rule. Stand barefoot on a flat surface, clamp the spirit level horizontally between your legs and measure the distance from the upper edge of the spirit level to the ground. This value corresponds to your stride length.
Alternatively, you can also determine your frame height based on your height, see the table below. However, the method using inseam length is more accurate.

- Rather the next frame in size when riding tour-orientated
- Deduct approx. 5 cm (or 2 inches respectively) of the theoretical size when using spring-mounted seat posts.

COMPOUND TECHNOLOGY
Different manufacturers classify their brake pads in various ways. This can potentially be confusing. While every brake compound is unique in its composition, all can however be grouped into one of two main families. These are: pads that use a resin binder, sintered metal pads.
Pads with a resin binder
This in simple terms means a pad whose constituent components are held together with a resin (a glue) which cures (hardens) during the manufacturing process. The other components can vary enormously but would generally include a combination of metal fibres and powders, carbon-based fibres and powders, ceramic powders.
Different manufacturers may describe these types of compounds in different ways, such as “Organic pads”, “Resin pads” or “Ceramic pads.” Resin-bound pads are generally considered as offering superior braking control and “feel” over sintered metal pads. FERODO bicycle pads are in the resin-bound category and are named “Mid-Metallic” as the pads have a relatively high content of metallic components within their formulations. This contributes to increasing pad performance and life. Some manufacturers market resin-bound brake pad formulations made with very low levels of metallic components. Often this is to reduce the production cost but it can also reduce performance and pad life.
Sintered Metal Pads
This group comprises pads which have a super-structure of fused metal particles. There is no glue or resin: the pad is held together by the metal powders fusing into each other during a very high temperature production process (known as “Sintering”). In addition to the metal powders, smaller quantities of carbon and ceramic particles are also present. This family is commonly given marketing descriptions such as “Sintered”, “Sintered metal” or “Metallic.”
ECE-R90 Homologation
The brake pad materials designated for road-use are ECE R90 certified. This means that they have been tested by an authorised third-party testing centre and have been judged to perform, in a series of defined tests, similarly to the original equipment pads.
