Calculate frame size
The right size of your hardtail mountain-bike:
The Inside leg length is multiplied by 0.226 and thus you get the theoretical value of the frame size in inch. One inch equals 2.54 cm.
If the theoretical value is in-between two sizes, the following rule of thumb can be applied:
- choose the smaller size when riding athletically
- choose the larger size when riding tour-orientated
How to determine your Inside leg length:
The Inside leg length or stride height is the length of the inside of the leg. The most accurate way to measure your stride length is to use a spirit level and a tape measure or folding rule. Stand barefoot on a flat surface, clamp the spirit level horizontally between your legs and measure the distance from the upper edge of the spirit level to the ground. This value corresponds to your stride length.
Alternatively, you can also determine your frame height based on your height, see the table below. However, the method using inseam length is more accurate.

No bending - no tingling
Bending the wrist compresses nerves, tendons and blood vessels. As a result, the carpal tunnel narrows and can damage the median nerve. Longer bike rides with increasing fatigue make a healthy posture more difficult. The wing design of the GP grips supports the hand, automatically brings the wrist into an ergonomically ideal position and prevents numbness, tingling and pain.
Gentle on the nerves
When cycling, the hands support a large part of the upper body weight on the handlebars. This creates high pressure on the small grip surface. This often pinches the very sensitive ulnar nerve, which runs in the area of the ball of the little finger close to the surface of the skin. This can lead to numbness. The wing grip increases the contact surface of the hand, distributes the pressure over a larger area and prevents discomfort.
Thick and thin for optimum control
So that you always have your bike under control, your hand should not completely enclose the grip. Ergon offers many grips, including the GP5, in the sizes "Small" and "Large". The difference relates to the grip width. This means that a larger hand has a better form fit on a thicker grip, while a thinner grip is best for a smaller hand. We recommend the Small size for hand (shoe) sizes 6.5-8.5 and the Large size for 8.5-10.5.
Tested back-friendly: Healthy Back Campaign
Back pain is the number one widespread ailment, which can quickly spoil the fun of cycling in particular. In a lengthy testing procedure by an interdisciplinary panel of experts, consisting of doctors, orthopaedists and physiotherapists, the back-friendly effect of the GP5 handle was officially confirmed with the AGR seal of approval from "Aktion Gesunder Rücken" (Campaign for Healthier Backs).
