After riding over 2000 km, I can confidently say the Continental Contact Speed 50 mm is an ideal high-speed tire for asphalt. It offers excellent – even excessive – puncture protection, with a flexible and durable sidewall. The tread is surprisingly thick, which means the tire only truly reveals its speed potential at higher pressures — around 3.5 bar (50 psi). For touring, it’s a near-perfect choice: fast, reliable, and tough. In terms of speed, it comes surprisingly close to clincher road tires. On gravel, it also performs quite well for a slick tire, provided the pressure is lower. Of course, it can’t be directly compared to something like René Herse tires, which are designed to run at much lower pressures (~2 bar). If Continental ever decides to make a lightweight version of this tread, it could become a fantastic budget-friendly alternative to premium supple tires.
