Choosing the right Children bike
For children to experience the two-wheeled fun early and according to their motor skills, choosing the right bike is just as important as the correct size.
Different from the adult bikes, where the frame size is the decisive factor, kid bikes are divided by the diameter of the wheel (in inches).
It’s the right size if the child is able to stand with both feet touching the ground completely when controlled dismounting the bike. A “growing into” a bike that is too big may spoil the fun for the child quickly and should be avoided for safety reasons also.
A fitted helmet should be part of the basic equipment, just like reflectors used for good visibility.
Balance Bikes
A first gentle approach for very small children, able to stand and walk on their own already (about 1 year and older) is possible indoors with the four-wheeled learner bikes like the Pukylino (for a height of 75cm and taller). For children 18 months and older we have models like the Wutsch (80 cm and taller), which can be used indoors and outdoors.
Starting at the age of about 2,5 years the child can get started with a two-wheeled balance bike.
These will train the sense of balance playfully – a great preparation for a “real“ bike. Saddle and handlebar should be positioned so the child can sit upright and have a good overview. The child should be able to easily reach the ground when sitting down. The legs should be angled to get a good push off the ground. We offer balance bikes with 10" or 12" wheels.
Once the child has discovered his or her love for the balance bike longer hikes are possible. If they like to just run or walk freely in between the light balance bike can easily be mounted on the parents’ back pack.
While smaller balance bikes are without brakes, the bigger models often come with a rim brake. Especially in the beginning, when the child is still moving slowly, the coordination with the brake is too much to ask for the child’s coordination skills. Experienced children can race through the terrain with a suspended model like the Puky LR Ride.
Now a solid rear brake is not only important for safety, but also a good learning tool for learning how to ride a bike. Those kind of balance bikes don’t grow old and children still enjoy them once they are able to ride the “real” bike.
Play Bikes
Children, who trained their sense of balance on the learner bike already can easily switch to a play bike. Stabilizers aren’t necessary. We offer play bikes in 12", 16" and 18". Those are good for children without prior balance bike experience also, just be prepared for a longer acclimatization period.
To keep the children from harm, the bikes are designed in bright colours, with padded handlebars and chain guards. The brake system is an effective drum brake, which can be used intuitive, as well as one or two rim brakes.
Kids Bikes roadworthy
Children with great experience on the play bike, are now able to start training on the road with an adult. When using a bike on the road the required lighting, reflectors and mudguards are mandatory.
We carry roadworthy equipped kid bikes in 20" and 24".
The power supply is generated with a low-maintenance hub dynamo, which is reliable in all weather conditions and only requires little effort. If used for transportation, a bike with a solid luggage rack should be chose
Kids Mountain Bike
For off-road-fun we also offer sturdy kid mountain bikes with a wheelsize from 16" (optional with stabilizers), 20" and 24". Besides light terrain bikes you will also find everyday use models with StVZO (German standard) equipment
