The right socks
To achieve optimal climate comfort it is really important to choose the best sock for the intended end use. The function of the GORE-TEX® membrane is not affected by the socks worn with the shoe, however, wearing the correct sock can have a significantly positive impact on the perceived climate comfort.Look for the right mix of materials: 100% cotton will absorb a lot of moisture and release it only very slowly. The moisture remains next to your feet and your feet start to feel cold. That is why a mix of high quality wool (e.g. Merino) and synthetic fibres (e.g. polyester, polyamide) is best.

Material
Upper: Nubuck leather with waxFor many years I had these leather Meindl Caracas GTX walking shoes, and used them very regularly for now and then a walk of a day. They are still in perfect shape after all that time. Still, at the moment I am the Algarve, Portugal, for a two month phototrip and wore these shoes daily. Unfortunately, when I bought these shoes several years ago, I didn’t bear in mind that walking shoes always should be bought 1 size and sometimes 1,5 sizes (European) larger than your normal shoe size. Therefore, when wearing them daily as now for my phototrip, my feet started swelling. So I now bought these excellent shoes again a size larger, and that problem has been solved. The leather and soles of my old shoes were still intact, and I bought a new pair of inner soles hoping that they still might serve for a lady companion for whom these might fit some day… Use the Meindl sport wax for maintenance! Goretex does a great job as it makes the shoes 100% waterproof, but as these are a low model and when the water is deep, your feet can still be soaking wet…
