Alpina Apax MIPS – MTB Helmet
Product information "Apax MIPS – MTB Helmet"
Lightweight off-road helmet: the Apax MIPS from Alpina
The adjustment system features a sleek design and secures the helmet evenly around the head in a 360-degree circle. You won’t find a cycling helmet that’s more customisable, smoother to adjust or more comfortable. Another plus for comfort: the removable padding. This ensures you always feel comfortable wearing it – no matter how hot things get off-road.
The Apax MIPS’s light weight is achieved through the Inmold manufacturing process, in which the outer shell is thermally bonded to the Hi-EPS. This results in a strong, seamless bond, which ensures a very stable construction. The lower edge of the helmet is protected by an additional polycarbonate shell. Thanks to the Seamless Connection, it fits seamlessly against the outer shell.
To ensure the highest possible safety on rough trails, the rear and temple areas are extended further downwards. This provides even greater head coverage. In the event of a fall with an oblique impact, Mips is designed to help reduce the rotational forces acting on the head. Large ventilation openings ensure optimal airflow, fly screens keep insects away from the head, and the height-adjustable visor guarantees additional protection in the field of vision.
Features – Apax MIPS
- MIPS: a system that protects against brain injuries that can be caused by rotational forces during an impact
- Airflow Venting: channels cooling air along the head
- Fly Net: the helmet’s front ventilation openings are fitted with a mesh
- Ceramic Shell: shatter- and scratch-resistant, UV-stable and antistatic
- Edge Protect: increases the helmet’s durability by covering the edges
- Ergomatic: a one-handed fastening system that remains securely fastened in the event of a fall
- Hi-EPS: small air chambers absorb impact forces to protect the head
- Inmold: the thermal bond between the upper and lower shells makes the helmet lightweight and sturdy
- Run System Ergo MIPS: size adjustment system with integrated MIPS
- Y-Clip: ensures a precise fit and therefore the best possible protection
Technologies
MIPS
MIPS is a system that protects against brain injuries that can be caused by rotational forces during an impact. The low-friction insert allows for a sliding movement of 10–15 mm in all directions, thereby reducing rotational movement in the event of a fall. MIPS thus offers additional protection.
AIR FLOW VENTING
Alpina’s developers devote a great deal of time and energy to continuously improving the ventilation of their cycling helmets. Through wind tunnel-tested vent placement, our engineers create a ‘Venturi’ effect inside the helmet, which cools the head, reduces sweating and enhances performance.
FLY NET
The front ventilation openings of the helmet are fitted with a mesh fabric. This serves the same purpose as an insect screen and prevents insect bites on the scalp during hot and humid rides and in such conditions.
CERAMIC SHELL
All Alpina helmets manufactured using the In-Mould process feature this shatter- and scratch-resistant polycarbonate shell. The preform is stretched over the mould of the future helmet under intense heat and pressed onto its Hi-EPS core under high pressure. The material is characterised by several qualities at once: it is shatter- and scratch-resistant, UV-stable and antistatic.
EDGE PROTECT
Edge Protect is a manufacturing process that ensures Inmold helmets have no sharp edges. This reduces the risk of injury in two ways: on the one hand, it protects the hands when handling the helmet; on the other hand, in the event of an impact, the neck and shoulder area is protected from scratches when it comes into contact with the lower edge of the helmet.
ERGOMATIC
Tried and tested hundreds of thousands of times and used in all Alpina cycling helmets: the well-known buckle with a red push-button and multi-stage automatic locking mechanism. Ergomatic can be operated with one hand – you can loosen the strap going uphill and tighten it going downhill – and cannot open by itself in the event of a fall.
HI-EPS
The inner shell of every Alpina helmet is made from Hi-EPS (‘High Expanded Polystyrene’). It consists of microscopically small air chambers which optimally absorb the forces exerted during an impact. Despite providing optimum protection, HI-EPS allows for extra-thin wall thicknesses and slim helmet shapes.
INMOLD
In the Inmold production process, the polycarbonate outer shell is ‘fused’ with the EPS granulate of the helmet body under high heat and intense pressure. This creates a large-area, inseparable bond between the outer and inner shells. Advantage: The helmet is very light yet extremely sturdy.
RUN SYSTEM ERGO MIPS
The first fit system with integrated MIPS. The RUN SYSTEM ERGO FLEX MIPS offers a personalised, height-adjustable fit for the helmet. This combination not only enhances comfort but also ensures additional safety in the event of impacts involving rotational forces.
Y-CLIP
A helmet can only provide protection if it remains in the optimal position during an impact. The way the two straps are secured beneath the ear plays a crucial role in this. Alpina’s ‘Y-Clip’ system guarantees adjustment accurate to the millimetre – in a matter of seconds.
