Different manufacturers classify their brake pads in different ways. This can be confusing. While each brake compound is unique in its composition, they can all be classified into one of two main families. These are: Pads that use a resin binder and sintered metal pads.
Coverings with a resin binder
Simply put, this is a rubber whose components are held together by a resin (an adhesive) that hardens during the manufacturing process. The other components can vary widely, but generally include a combination of metal fibers and powders, carbon-based fibers and powders, and ceramic powders.
Different manufacturers refer to these types of compounds differently, such as "organic pads," "resin pads," or "ceramic pads." Resin-bonded pads generally provide better brake control and "feel" than sintered metal pads. FERODO brake pads fall into the resin-bonded category and are referred to as "mid-metallic" because the pads have a relatively high percentage of metallic components in their formulation. This contributes to higher performance and pad life. Some manufacturers offer resin-bonded brake pads with a very low percentage of metallic components. This is often done to reduce production costs, but can also reduce pad performance and life.
Sintered metal brake pads
This group includes brake pads that have a molten metal particle structure. There is no adhesive or resin: the pad is held together by the metal powders, which fuse together at very high temperatures during a production process (known as "sintering"). In addition to the metal powders, smaller amounts of carbon and ceramic particles are also included. This family is usually given designations such as "sintered," "sintered metal," or "metallic."
ECE R90 approval
Brake pads intended for road use are ECE R90 certified. This means that they have been tested by an authorized test center and have shown similar behavior to the original pads in a series of defined tests.
